The story

A cartographer who never finished her last map.

When Marenne returns to the flooded coast of her childhood, she finds her grandmother’s unfinished atlas — a book of places that no longer exist, drawn from a memory the tide has been slowly taking back.

To finish the map, she will have to remember what she left behind — and decide which of the lost places are worth bringing back. A luminous story about grief, home, and the quiet courage of drawing a line on a blank page.

Critical praise

What the critics are saying

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“A stunning, tide-swept debut. Vance draws grief like a coastline — patient, exact, and impossible to look away from.”

— The Paris Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“The rare illustrated novel where word and image carry equal weight. I finished it in a single, breathless sitting.”

— The Guardian

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Gorgeous and devastating. The kind of book you press into a friend’s hands and say: trust me.”

— NPR Books

I have not stopped thinking about the final chapter for weeks. A book about maps that turns out to be a book about everything.
